Smolka is a member of the Graduate Field of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology and the Graduate Field of Genetics, Genomics and Development. The Smolka lab studies the mechanisms by which dysfunctions in DNA damage checkpoint kinases lead to genomic instability and, consequently, cancer.

Smolka explained in the interview: “Lab-on-a-Chip systems enable the rapid detection of characteristic sections of the genome of pathogens. The lab-on-a-chip takes up the sample liquid to be examined in a microchannel network with a detection chamber; in this chamber, DNA sequences of the test molecules are identified which, for example, indicate the antibiotic resistance of the tested

Jag har på egen hand beslutat att vi ska byta namn till FC Lab.Gruppen  The Smolka lab investigates signaling networks involved in genome maintenance and cell cycle control. We use mass spectrometry technologies, in combination with genetic and biochemical approaches, to elucidate the organization, dynamics and regulation of DNA damage signaling in yeast and mammals. Dr. Marcus Smolka Research in the Smolka lab is aimed at understanding the role and regulation of checkpoint kinases during meiosis. In particular, we like to determine how misregulation of these kinases impacts proper meiotic progression, genome integrity and fertility. For further information please see Dr. Smolka's website. Cornell researchers have developed a new technique to understand the actions of key proteins required for cancer cells to proliferate. The technique will help guide the development of drugs currently in clinical trials for anti-cancer treatments that inhibit this class of proteins, called kinases.
